Kunyi The Real Cleanse Food In Ayurveda

In the science of Ayurveda, strong digestion is key for good health. Common habits like eating too fast, not chewing enough, eating too often and poor food combinations can weaken your digestion and cause many problems over the long run. If you experience any symptoms of indigestion, consider making kunyi.

Kunyi, sometimes also spelled kunji, is a simple but powerful Ayurvedic recipe often used in Panchakarma to cleanse the body and prepare for treatments. It can be made anytime of year and is balancing for all three Doshas, but especially Pitta and Vata. In fact, in the west we see Kitchari as the cleanse food of Ayurveda when in truth Kitchari should be consumed in the Rejuvenation phase of the cleanse.

If you are experiencing weakness, indigestion, gas and bloating and acidity, burping, stuffy nose, headaches, cloudy mind, fatigue and overall feeling of not being well then try this recipe for 3-7 days to allow for your body to heal itself. By giving your digestion time to relax, you allow for healing to happen.

This recipe serves 4. Preparation time is only about 15 - 20 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white basmati rice or quinwa

  • 1 1/2 cups water

  • 1 teaspoon mineral salt (Himalayan is best)

  • 1/2 tablespoon ghee (avoid ghee for the first 2 days of your cleanse)

  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger

  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated turmeric

Instructions

  1. Heat the ghee lightly in a medium sized pot (first 2 days of cleanse add 2 tbs water instead)

  2. Add the salt and spices and sauté until it is sizzling slightly

  3. Add the rice and stir until it is evenly coated in the ghee and spices

  4. Then add the water

  5. Bring it to a high boil and then cover it. Bring it down to a light boil for around 20 minutes, or until the rice is soft.

  6. Let it cool and enjoy!

If your agni, or digestive fire, is weak and you're experiencing indigestion, rejuvenate by simplifying your diet with kunyi and getting plenty of rest. Kunyi will easily supply nutrients to your body while your agni heals and strengthens!
